MACHAME ROUTE 6DAYS/ 5 NIGHTS “WHISKY ROUTE”
Sometimes called the Whisky route. This is a popular route up steep paths through magnificent forests to gain a ridge leading through the moorland zones to the Shira Plateau. It then traverses beneath the glaciated precipices of the Southern Ice fields to join the Barafu Route to the summit. An extra day could be added to the itinerary, best spent on the Shira Plateau, where you could walk to the Shira Needles. Strong groups could omit camping at Karanga River. The Mweka route is used for the descent.
 
DAY1: Moshi- Arrive Keys Annex Hotel or Similar (BB).
 
Day 2: (Machame Hut) The route starts at Machame gate walking through thick forest until it eventually breaks into giant heath near Machame hut campsite at 1000ft.There is a strong possibility of rain in the forest, which will transform the trail into a very soggy, muddy and slippery experience. Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner. 
 
Day 3: (Shira Hut) Ascend through heath and moorland to Shira hut at 12598ft. overnight with fine view Kibo’s western breach and the wide Shira plateau. Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.
 
Day 4: (Barranco Hut) Proceed towards Kibo peak, and then return southwards just before reaching the lava outcrop beyond which the lava tower hut is located. Crossing several ridges and valleys, you arrive at the lip of the great Barranco, views from the camp at Barranco hut 12795ft. Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.
 
Day 5: (Barafu Hut) Descend into the gorge then climb it’s vertical eastern wall, walk be neat Kibo’s southern ice field still going until the path descend into the shallow Karanga valley (last water) crossing lava ridge to the Barafu hut at 15092ft. Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.
 
Day 6: (Uhuru Peak) You begin the summit climb in the frigid post midnight hours. Passing through boulder-strewn ridge and gap between the Rebman and Ratzel glaciers to arrive at the rim near stele point about midway between Gillman’s point and UHURU PEAK at 19340ft. from there you descend straight to Mweka hut. Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.
 
Day 7: (Mweka Hut) After an early and well deserved breakfast, it is a short 3 – hour and scenic hike back to the park gate. At Mweka gate you sign your name and details in register. This also where successful climbers receive their summit gold certificates. You now drive back to Moshi Keys Hotel for long over due hot shower.
 
Day 8: Depart after breakfast or start safari with us to Tanzania National Park

MACHAME ROUTE OUT MARANGU MT. KILIMANJARO CLIMB 8 DAYS

DAY 1: Moshi - Arrive Keys Annex Hotel or Similar (BB)
 
DAY 2: Machame Gate (1490m) - Machame camp (2980m)
 
Hiking time: 7 hours, Distance: About 18 km's, Habitat: Montane forest
Transfer from your hotel to the Kilimanjaro National Park gate at Machame. From here, you trek through the lush forest to Machame hut . Overnight stay at the camp.
 
DAY 3: Machame camp (2980m) - Shira camp (3840m)
Hiking time: 6 hours, Distance: About 9 km's, Habitat: Moorland
Leave the forest. The path follows a steep ridge passing through open moorlands crossing a large gorge to reach Shira hut. Overnight stay at the camp.
 
DAY 4: Shira (3840m)-Lava Tower (4630m)-Barranco camp (3950m)
Hiking time: 7 hours, Distance: About 15 km's, Habitat: Semi desert
You turn eastwards and continue ascending through the dry landscape before dropping again to reach Barranco hut. Overnight stay at the camp.
 
DAY 5: Barranco camp (3950m)- Barafu camp (4550m)
Hiking time: 7 hours, Distance: About 13 km's, Habitat: Alpine desert
 The path climbs steep out of the Barranco valley and crosses the Karanga valley then turns north to reach Barafu Hut. Overnight stay at the camp.
 
DAY 6: SUMMIT ATTEMPT
Barafu camp (4550m)-Uhuru Peak (5895m)-Mweka (3100m) Hiking time: 8 hours to reach Uhuru Peak 7/8 hours to descend to Mweka Distance: About 7 km's ascent - 23 km's descent.
 
Habitat: Stone scree and ice-capped summit. Along day with an early start to reach the crater, ream at the Stella point in time for sunrise, then to Uhuru peak, the highest point in Africa. After wards, descend to Gilman's point and down to Horombo hut.  Over night, stay at the camp.
 
DAY 7: Descend down passing Mandara hut to the gate where you are transferred back to your hotel in Moshi for dinner and over night.
 
DAY 8: Depart after breakfast or continue safari to the national park Kili Explorer Team will arrange it for you.
